Autumn in Glendalough

There’s something magical about Glendalough in autumn – a beauty that feels ancient, untouched, and deeply alive. Nestled in the heart of County Wicklow, this glacial valley transforms into a masterpiece of rich, warm colours each year. The hillsides burn with gold, amber, and deep crimson, and the crisp chill in the air feels like nature’s way of sharpening the senses.

Stay at The Glendalough Hotel, perfectly located across the road from the Monastic City and experience Glendalough in all it’s finery without the crowds. Each morning, after a hearty breakfast, step out and be among the first into the valley. Cross the path in front of the hotel an cloimb the ancient steps into the monastic city, the only sounds will be your footsteps and the rustle of leaves underfoot. The deer are often out at this hour grazing on the lawn of the hotel, their breath curling in the cold air like tiny clouds, moving slowly through the bracken.

The lakes at Glendalough are at their most enchanting in the early hours. A soft mist rises off the water, swirling and drifting as the sun begins to peek over the mountains. Reflections ripple in the stillness, catching the fiery hues of the surrounding trees. It’s the kind of beauty that makes you slow down, breathe deeply, and simply take it all in.

And then, there are the evenings. As the sun sinks behind the mountains, the valley slips into a soft, golden darkness. Shadows stretch across the St Kevin’s tower, and the last rays of light dance on the water of the lakes. There’s a profound stillness here at dusk – an almost spiritual sense that you’re standing in a place where time moves differently.

Glendalough in autumn isn’t just a place to see. It’s something to feel. From the morning mists to the evening’s quiet glow, the valley invites you to experience a slower, more mindful rhythm of life – one that lingers in your heart long after you’ve gone.
